Yaksa Trek (a popular trek for mountain scenery)

Day 1
Arrive in Paro. Paro valley is one of the most beautiful valleys in the country. The town of Paro small town a few kilometres from the town is surrounded by paddy fields.

Day 2
Today we hike to Taktshang Monastery clinging on the face of a cliff. It is a good acclimatisation for the trek for your 11 days of trek.

Day 3
Paro to Shana

Time: 6 hrs
Distance: 17 km
We drive to the end of the road near the ruins of Drukgyal Dzong (Victory Fortress) to begin the trek. While our luggage is being loaded on to the ponies, we will have enough time to walk around the remains of the dzong burnt down in 1951. Drukgyal Dzong was built to commemorate the victory over Tibetan invaders in 1644.
Today, we take the feeder road as far as the army check post at Gunyitsawa. We can choose to take a day hike near Paro for acclimatisation and drive towards the camp at Shana in the late afternoon.

Day 4
Shana to Soe Thangthangkha
Time: 7 hrs
Distance: 19 km
The trail ascends across the river valley forested with pine and rhododendron. Along the way, we can enjoy memorable view of Mt. Jomolhari. We camp in a meadow at around 3,860 m.

Day 5
Soe Thangthangkha to Jangothang
Time: 6 hrs
Distance: 19 km
The trail continues along the river today and passes by an army post. Today’s trail offers magnificent view of snow-capped mountains in all directions. At around 4,040 m, we will see grazing yaks and yak herders. In the evening, we camp beneath a ruined fortress at the base of Mt. Jomolhari.

Day 6
Rest at Jangothang
Today, we can either stay put at the camp enjoying the mesmerizing views in all directions or hike towards Mt. Jomolhari to the west, Jichu Drake to the north and other mountains towards the east.

Day 7
Jangothang to Chora
Time: 7 hrs
Distance: 16 km
Today we cross the Pachhu (Paro River) across a a wooden bridge and climb up a hillside towards Tshophu at 4,380 m. Then we continue to walk towards the second lake across a serene slope. After a descent, we climb steeply to Bhonte La at 4,890 m. From crossing the pass, the trail descends to the Dhumzo Chhu, and after crossing the river, a short climb leads us to the camp in a meadow at Chora at 3,800 m.

Day 8
Chora to Thombu Shong
Time: 5 hrs
Distance: 12 km
Today the trail ascends 100 m over a ridge and then drops to a stream. After crossing the stream, the trail climbs a hillside and descends into a small valley. The trail then goes past a few huts on the way to Takhung La at 4,520 m. A short walk from there takes us to Thombu Shong at 4,180 m, our campsite among three yak herders’ huts.

Day 9
Thombu Shong via Gunyitsawa to Thimphu
Time: 5 hrs
Distance: 13 km
From Thombu La at 4,380, descend to about 4,000 m. The sharply descends to finally taking us to the helipad at Gunyitsawa at 2,730 m.
